The Ultimate Moving Day Checklist for Lodi Residents

8 min readLodi Moving Company

Moving is one of life's most stressful events, but it does not have to be chaotic. Whether you are moving across Lodi or relocating from another city, a structured plan makes all the difference. This week-by-week checklist will keep you organized from your first packing session to the moment you settle into your new home.

Four Weeks Before Moving Day

Declutter and downsize. Go through every room and separate your belongings into four categories: keep, donate, sell, and discard. Lodi has several convenient donation options including the Salvation Army on Cherokee Lane, Goodwill locations in the area, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. For items worth selling, try Facebook Marketplace or host a weekend garage sale in your neighborhood.

Research and book your movers. If you are hiring professionals, now is the time to get quotes. Request at least three in-home estimates so you can compare pricing, services, and insurance coverage. At Lodi Moving Company, we provide free, guaranteed estimates with no hidden fees. Summer months between May and September are peak season in the Central Valley, so booking early secures your preferred date and time slot.

Create a moving binder or digital folder. Keep all moving-related documents in one place: estimates, receipts, contracts, inventory lists, and important records. This will be your single source of truth throughout the entire process and will save you time when you need to reference any detail.

Notify important parties. Begin the address change process with your employer, banks, insurance providers, subscription services, and the USPS. You can file a change of address with the United States Postal Service online at usps.com or at the Lodi Post Office on South Pleasant Avenue. Start forwarding at least one week before your move.

Three Weeks Before Moving Day

Start packing non-essentials. Begin with items you will not need in the next three weeks: seasonal clothing, books, decorative items, holiday supplies, and rarely used kitchen gadgets. Label every box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs in at your new home. Use a color-coded system for extra efficiency.

Arrange utility transfers. This is crucial for Lodi residents because the city operates its own utility services. Contact the City of Lodi Utilities at (209) 333-6706 to set up water, sewer, and electric service at your new address. Allow at least 3 business days for processing. If you are moving outside the City of Lodi service area, you will need to contact PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 for gas and electric service.

Transfer or set up internet and cable. Contact your internet service provider at least two weeks ahead. In Lodi, common providers include Comcast Xfinity, AT&T, and Frontier. Schedule installation for your move-in day or the day before so you have connectivity when you arrive.

Refill prescriptions. Make sure you have at least a 30-day supply of all medications. If you are switching pharmacies, have your current pharmacy transfer your prescriptions to a location near your new address. CVS, Walgreens, and Raley's Pharmacy all have locations throughout Lodi.

Two Weeks Before Moving Day

Confirm your moving date and details. Call your moving company to reconfirm the date, arrival time, and any special instructions. If you are moving into a complex or gated community, make sure your movers know about access codes, elevator reservations, or parking restrictions well in advance.

Pack room by room. Focus on one room at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Use a numbering system that corresponds to a master inventory list so you can track exactly what is in each box. Wrap fragile items individually and use packing paper or bubble wrap liberally. Never leave empty space in boxes because contents will shift and break during transport.

Arrange care for kids and pets on moving day. Moving day is hectic and potentially dangerous for little ones and animals. If possible, arrange for a family member or friend to watch young children and pets so they are safe and out of the way while heavy furniture is being carried through doorways and hallways.

Update your vehicle registration. If you are moving to a new address within California, you must notify the DMV within 10 days. You can update your address online at dmv.ca.gov. The closest DMV office to Lodi is located on East Kettleman Lane and serves both Lodi and Woodbridge residents.

One Week Before Moving Day

Pack your essentials box. This is the most important box you will pack. Include toiletries, phone chargers, medications, a change of clothes for each family member, basic cleaning supplies, paper towels, snacks, water bottles, important documents, and any tools you might need for reassembling furniture. Keep this box with you in your personal vehicle rather than loading it on the truck.

Defrost your refrigerator. If you are moving your refrigerator, unplug it at least 24 hours before the move to allow it to defrost completely. Clean the interior, remove all shelves, and prop the doors open to prevent mildew.

Disassemble large furniture. Take apart bed frames, dining tables, shelving units, and any other large pieces that can be broken down. Keep all hardware in labeled plastic bags taped securely to the corresponding furniture piece so nothing gets lost.

Take photos of electronics. Before disconnecting your TV, computer, router, and entertainment system, photograph the back of each device so you can see exactly how everything was connected. This saves enormous frustration when setting up at your new place.

Moving Day

Do a final walkthrough. Check every room, closet, cabinet, drawer, and storage area. Look in the garage, shed, attic, and under sinks. It is surprisingly easy to leave items behind, especially in hard-to-reach places like high closet shelves and basement storage areas.

Protect your floors. Lay down drop cloths or moving blankets along the path movers will use. This protects both your current home and your new one from scuffs, scratches, and dirt tracked in from the truck.

Be available to direct your movers. Stay on-site during loading and unloading so you can answer questions about where things should go. Having your labeled boxes and a room-by-room plan makes this much smoother for everyone involved.

Read meters and document condition. Take photos of utility meters and the overall condition of your old home before handing over the keys. Do the same at your new home upon arrival. This protects you from disputes about deposits, damage claims, or utility billing discrepancies.

After the Move

Unpack systematically. Start with the kitchen and bathrooms since these are the rooms you will need most immediately. Then move to bedrooms so everyone has a comfortable place to sleep. Leave storage areas, garages, and guest rooms for last when the pressure is off.

Meet your neighbors. Lodi is a friendly community, and introducing yourself to your neighbors goes a long way. It helps you feel settled and gives you local resources for recommendations on everything from restaurants to plumbers to the best taco spot on Kettleman Lane.

Register to vote. Update your voter registration at registertovote.ca.gov with your new address. San Joaquin County elections are managed by the Registrar of Voters office, and staying registered ensures you can participate in local elections that shape your new community.
